Keep in mind that Forensic Imaging is not the same as making a normal or backup copy of a hard drive. While your IT people are very good at what they do, they are not trained in proper forensic techniques. Any copy made internally will most likely not be admissible in court and deleted files may not be able to be retrieved. A true forensic image follows specialized crucial procedures which perform a bit-for-bit copy of every sector on the hard drive, allowing an examiner to recover all files and emails (regardless of whether they were deleted or not), and also other vital data from the disk's slack and unallocated spaces.
